a question for my conservative Christian friends on imgflip (it ain't an easy answer)

1 Thessalonians 4:16-17

Conservatives. All about the strum und drang. Jesus consorted with w**res and tax collectors. He insisted that others check their own sinful lives before judging others. He pointed out that those who pray with their hands in the air are drawing attention to themselves and not God, and should pray alone and with humility. He said not to be concerned with the world and its concerns. Those who are judged on the last day would be judged according to how they helped the least amongst them. The nasty, fiery stuff is for those who indulge in their hypocrisies and self-righteousness. Look inside yourself before running to the word for justification. If there is a hell many conservative Christians will be vainly pleading their case before a stern judge.

Actually, Christ prayed and worshiped openly at the temple in Jerusalem (some believe) his entire life. He was not opposed to this practice, per se. He was opposed to the practice of openly praying, "twerking," dramatic worship, etc., as pure show and with no spiritual substance. He also had his own personal time of devotion to the father, at which time he allowed only certain disciples to join him.
