Star Trek was actually more about the story than special effects. It hit on a lot of the social issues of the time, more like a sci-fi Aesop's fables. Although there were some very cool things at the time that we take for granted today featured in the show. Automatic doors didn't exist at the time, flip phones were still 30 years away from even being thought of just to name a couple. It is something that when viewed outside of the context of it's time loses a lot of it's relevancy, but still the stories are good :)

Matrix Morpheus Meme | WHAT IF I TOLD YOU WE'VE HAD AUTOMATIC DOORS SINCE THE 1950S | image tagged in memes, matrix morpheus | made w/ Imgflip meme maker
But other than that, yes, Star Trek did a pretty fair job of predicting future tech. Roddenberry always claimed that there was nothing on the show that was impossible according to the laws of physics, but I was always a bit skeptical of the transporter. <G>

Scientists are working on transporters as we speak, actually. It's pretty slow going, though, and I think that they just maybe have transperted a single molecule or something like that. The actual transporting, though, is really just destroying the original and replicating it in another place.

True teleportation will probably happen only when we learn how to bend space and time (string theory)

Man, String Theory is some tricky business! I think you have a point, though.

String Theory fascinates me.

It fascinates me as well. String Theory, General Relativity, all that jazz.

That's in large part the source of my skepticism. Not that it couldn't be done at all, but rather that it couldn't be done as seen on TV. <G>

I'm not claiming or insinuating that there's any metaphysical element to it, but the fact is that we really don't understand what consciousness is. We just don't know yet what makes us self aware. Given that, there's a real possibility that the first time you use a transporter will be the last thing you ever experience. What comes out at the other end will look like you, act like you and have all of your memories (but none of your experiences). He'll think he is you and everyone will accept him as you, but he won't BE you.

True, just not the "star trek" type. There was a great Discovery show a few years back on "Star Trek Tech". I'm not a trekkie as such, but it does bring back a lot of great memories when I browse through the images.

I would love to see someone recapture the magic of the original, but it's hard to reproduce there was a synergy.

A concept where different energies come together in synchronization to create something that transcends the sum of the components. Also some pretty good moog synthesizer music from the 70s :)

Okay, to simplify, think of ranch dressing as an example. You may not enjoy eating onions and garlic separately and washing it down with buttermilk, but mix it all together and you have something MUCH better than the parts that went into it.

I don't dislike either. I think though it would be funny as hell to see a fight with stormtroopers and redshirts.

Yeah, I would totally love to see the "action" that's bound to happen! XD
