Yeah. But you can understand why I thought it was funny right? (Like from the point of view of someone who didn't know what we were doing, it would have been pretty unexpected!) :)

Of course. It looked so out of left field. It made sense to me after 2 1/2 hours of steady meme-zing lol. Do you think I should delete???

I deleted.

I think either way would have been fine. There wasn't anything in your comment to upset anyone. It just would have been a bit of a puzzle.

But if deleting it means one less thing for you to be concerned about, then that's fine. :)

I used the Add Image feature to insert the smiley clipart into a blank white square of the proper size, then stretched it out.

That's ok, but I'm afraid that means you have to turn in that Grammar Nazi flag and wave a white flag of surrender instead! :)

I wasn't serious! You're one of the valuable Grammar Nazis on the site, and it's much-needed! Please don't give up.

However, I like that picture of the bear with the white flag, and I'm saving it to use as a meme comment for when I lose online arguments! :)

The title of the meme is an example of what he's thinking about.

"he were" is in the subjunctive mood

"he were better at explaining the subjunctive" is the subordinate clause (it modifies the verb "used to wish" in the main clause)

No matter what verb tense you use in the main clause, e.g., past ("wished" or "used to wish"), present ("wishes"), or future, ("is going to wish" or "will wish"), it wouldn't change the use of the subjunctive mood in the subordinate clause (it would remain "he were" in all cases).

I know it sounds pathetic but I don't care :p

Hmmm. If you feel like you need to save a screenshot of it to look at later, then that means I probably didn't explain it well. It's actually not complicated.

How about rephrasing the bottom caption so that it doesn't have the word "subjunctive" in it?

E.g., the grammar cat ponders: "What if the verb tense in the main clause doesn't determine the verb mood in the subordinate clause?"

That's the basic concept - verb tense and verb mood are not the same.

"Subjunctive" is just a specific example in which that general rule applies. I put it in because the subjunctive mood is not a commonly used mood, and therefore makes the meme sound smart. :)

Does that help, or am I just making it worse? (If you're still not getting it, feel free to ask me a question about something I might have skipped over.)

I haven't really studied grammar in a very, very long time :p On top of that, I can be a slow learner at times. The things like "clause" and "subjunctive" are terms I'm not too familiar with :/ when I get home next week I'll try to stop by Barnes and Noble and buy Grammar for Dummies :)

I like the meme, but it's not front page material. I think the grammar joke makes it too obscure.
