"he were" is in the subjunctive mood

"he were better at explaining the subjunctive" is the subordinate clause (it modifies the verb "used to wish" in the main clause)

No matter what verb tense you use in the main clause, e.g., past ("wished" or "used to wish"), present ("wishes"), or future, ("is going to wish" or "will wish"), it wouldn't change the use of the subjunctive mood in the subordinate clause (it would remain "he were" in all cases).

Hmmm. If you feel like you need to save a screenshot of it to look at later, then that means I probably didn't explain it well. It's actually not complicated.

How about rephrasing the bottom caption so that it doesn't have the word "subjunctive" in it?

E.g., the grammar cat ponders: "What if the verb tense in the main clause doesn't determine the verb mood in the subordinate clause?"

That's the basic concept - verb tense and verb mood are not the same.

"Subjunctive" is just a specific example in which that general rule applies. I put it in because the subjunctive mood is not a commonly used mood, and therefore makes the meme sound smart. :)
