Yes indeed, family pets do get stolen, cooked, and sold in markets sometimes. You googled it?

I once saw a market where cats were in bamboo cages. When one was purchased, they would grab the cat and dip it in hot oil for just a second. The skin could then be pulled off like a loose glove but the cat was still "alive" so that it would be fresh when taken home to be butchered and cooked.

That's better experience than google! But I wouldn't want that done to any animal.
