If the government declassified everything, nobody would believe a damn word of it.

I'm not saying that it's a theory, it happened. The US was at war with these guys and at the end wound up helping them instead of bringing them to trial. I'm sure that even people with high security clearances wish that they didn't know what they know.

This is a pretty complicated issue. On the one hand, I do want to know more about what the government is up to, but that is counterbalanced by my concern for letting North Korea, Iran, China, Russia, or other rivals/potential enemies knowing about what we're doing.
Also, anyone remember Valerie Plame? She was the CIA agent whose cover the Bush administration blew open in retaliation for her husband trying to expose the truth about the administration's claims of WMDs in Iraq. Outside of the political shitstorm that caused, any agents or insiders she had recruited in Iraq had to get their asses out or go to ground to avoid being disappeared. The US would end up virtually blind without those agents.
There are some things that I would like to know that would not be likely to cause serious repercussions, such as Gitmo, but it's not a long list.
If everything the government was doing was known to anyone with internet, the US would be screwed.

I agree. But inquiring minds want to know

I know, and I'm one of them. I just wanted to point out the potential dangers of the wrong people knowing too much.

Damn right. Anyone sympathizing with their regime who really knew what they were doing would wind up saying, "You guys are [email protected] nuts!"

That's true. Fifty percent of the time they won't admit it, and forty nine percent of the time you just don't hear about it.

When this country was young the role of our government was to protect our citizens and they're still trying to. But when the government harms its own citizens many red flags go up. Questions also arise when there is huge amounts of money being spent and no answers about where it went.
