When I moved to Connecticut and got a union job there, there were a lot of people asking if we were hiring, but didn't want applications. I told the manager this and she informed me thatin order to get welfare all they had to do was "look" for a job.

I read somewhere, that in Japan, the students pitch in and do some janitorial duties; prisoners have to work, etc. If we made service mandatory (military or even for that matter community service), it seems to me there would be a lot less entitlement mentality then what we currently have.

Haha! And then when they're done partying on some else's dime, other college students will party on their dime when they're having to go get a job after college.

Technically, one of three: In the past 55 yrs, we had JFK, LBJ and Carter. Any way you slice it, JFK had the most potential. LBJ was a crazed socialist and Carter, well, told us to wear sweaters.

Another great meme Invicta. Some of the other comments seem a little too socialistic for me, but still a great message in your meme.

If you're interested:

I believe that a mandatory 2 year service after high school in the military would be great for everyone.

As long as its boot camp is at MCRD(either coast).

But during this 2 years you aren't in combat. Just training and serving in America like a national guard or reserve status. But no combat at all.

After that 2 years, you choose to stay or go.

If you stay, you choose a branch and MOS and go to school for that job. And combat is likely.

If you go you still have your benefits and scholarships and etc. intact. And you can pursue a small business or college or whatever.

Staying would be for some sort of retirement incentives.

But there would never be a a draft. Anyone who volunteers to stay in will fill the military's ranks in terms or enlistments.

If the government can't get enough of us to serve in their "wars" then they just don't go to war.

And if America is invaded, the citizens can defend it.

Everyone would know how to defend themselves, be disciplined, and have earned their citizenship.

So, similar to Starship Troopers(novel), but a lot less fascistic. :{

I read Starship Troopers in 1984!!!! The movie was disappointing! (to a degree). I liked the concept! Everyone wanted to contribute! It was their goal! That novel is old,.... but way cool! I liked the suits,... jumping! It wasn't in the movie!

Cool. I read it after seeing the film and it made me wish the film had just done the book and not a stylized and abridged version of it.

There was no mention of the Skinnies at all and the way they dropped Johnny's father as a character sucked. That was a huge part of the story arc for Rico.

And God yes, the suits. I wanted to see the Marauder suits so bad.

But if you watch the Japanese OVA of SST you'll be happier. If you like anime. But it has the suits, and follows the book. It's on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIZty-Eol4s

That's the first episode of 6. :{

I liked both the book and the movie (for different reasons).

I like your thoughts about mandatory military service for all citizens, and how it could be made to work.

PS - The movie Starship Troopers 3 had something like the Marauder suits in the end of the film. Low-budget straight-to-video, but I thought it was a decent watch. :)

It did have nice boobs in it. lol But they could have done the suits better.

If you check that youtube link out, you'll see that the Japanese were way more faithful to the book.

And you can even see clear influence on the 1997 film. :{

The book was awesome,... I had higher hopes for the movie although I did enjoy it! The mandatory service thing was cool for "total" citizenship,... and it put everyone in a field where they were best suited. It was a cool concept! I like the way they had people who's goal was to serve,.. contribute some way. I never saw the last one,...
5 ups, 8y
It puts everyone in their military in a field they're good in just like the real life US military.

But the citizens were free to pursue any careers they wanted after service. And if they never served were still able to pursue some careers and had good standards of living. :{

I was in 7th grade when I saw it in theaters and I liked it before I read the book.

The film simply can't hold a candle to the novel.

But those shower tits and later tent tits were nice.

The film is still entertaining and I still watch it about once a year. But if you read the book you'll be disappointed too. :{

Now I want to watch the movie again!!! The book I have is waaaaaay,... old! Your eml had me looking for it yesterday,.. I even went in my attic! lmao! Couldn't find it though! I'm pretty sure Heinlein wrote that book in the 50's... which made it even more cool when I read it! What a concept! I loaned that book to a dozen guys probably,.. whom all read it in a few days. I want to find it now!

Watch the director's cut. It's got some deleted scenes added back in. But if you get to, watch the anime BEFORE the 1997 film. You'll see how the anime influenced the film.

Yeah it was published in 1959. He was commenting on the last few wars and his experiences in the military.

But his ideas for orbital drop troopers is actually being implemented slowly into the military. The USMC have been developing orbital drop troopers ever since the novel came out. And Bumgardener's jump is just another small part of it. They want an orbital craft that can take off from the US and drop troops into any combat zone in the world within a few hours of take off. Which would change warfare dramatically.

Also, powered armor has been in development since the book caught on with the military. And the USMC/Army often cite SST as the inspiration for their programs.

Most people always assume Halo is the reason, but they don't get that the Halo series is just a ripoff of the SST novel and films.

I hope you can find your book though bro. It's a great read. :{

Tetsouswrath...I know that this thread was way old...long story, I was looking at the leader board, saw Invicta103, clicked on this meme, and started reading comments...

So, my question to you is, were you a Marine? They way that you wrote in the above comment and elsewhere makes me think so.
1 up, 7y
No. I'm not in the military. I have family in the Corps and my dad was in the Navy.

I was going to join but was getting lied to by my recruiter(they're not all like this guy) so I stayed in college. Now I'm too old for the Corps. X{D
