I read somewhere, that in Japan, the students pitch in and do some janitorial duties; prisoners have to work, etc. If we made service mandatory (military or even for that matter community service), it seems to me there would be a lot less entitlement mentality then what we currently have.

Another great meme Invicta. Some of the other comments seem a little too socialistic for me, but still a great message in your meme.

If you're interested:

I believe that a mandatory 2 year service after high school in the military would be great for everyone.

As long as its boot camp is at MCRD(either coast).

But during this 2 years you aren't in combat. Just training and serving in America like a national guard or reserve status. But no combat at all.

After that 2 years, you choose to stay or go.

If you stay, you choose a branch and MOS and go to school for that job. And combat is likely.

If you go you still have your benefits and scholarships and etc. intact. And you can pursue a small business or college or whatever.

Staying would be for some sort of retirement incentives.

But there would never be a a draft. Anyone who volunteers to stay in will fill the military's ranks in terms or enlistments.

If the government can't get enough of us to serve in their "wars" then they just don't go to war.

And if America is invaded, the citizens can defend it.

Everyone would know how to defend themselves, be disciplined, and have earned their citizenship.

So, similar to Starship Troopers(novel), but a lot less fascistic. :{

I read Starship Troopers in 1984!!!! The movie was disappointing! (to a degree). I liked the concept! Everyone wanted to contribute! It was their goal! That novel is old,.... but way cool! I liked the suits,... jumping! It wasn't in the movie!
reply
7 ups, 2 replies
Cool. I read it after seeing the film and it made me wish the film had just done the book and not a stylized and abridged version of it.

There was no mention of the Skinnies at all and the way they dropped Johnny's father as a character sucked. That was a huge part of the story arc for Rico.

And God yes, the suits. I wanted to see the Marauder suits so bad.

But if you watch the Japanese OVA of SST you'll be happier. If you like anime. But it has the suits, and follows the book. It's on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIZty-Eol4s

That's the first episode of 6. :{
reply
7 ups, 2 replies
I liked both the book and the movie (for different reasons).

I like your thoughts about mandatory military service for all citizens, and how it could be made to work.

PS - The movie Starship Troopers 3 had something like the Marauder suits in the end of the film. Low-budget straight-to-video, but I thought it was a decent watch. :)
reply
6 ups, 1 reply
It did have nice boobs in it. lol But they could have done the suits better.

If you check that youtube link out, you'll see that the Japanese were way more faithful to the book.

And you can even see clear influence on the 1997 film. :{

The book was awesome,... I had higher hopes for the movie although I did enjoy it! The mandatory service thing was cool for "total" citizenship,... and it put everyone in a field where they were best suited. It was a cool concept! I like the way they had people who's goal was to serve,.. contribute some way. I never saw the last one,...
reply
5 ups
It puts everyone in their military in a field they're good in just like the real life US military.

But the citizens were free to pursue any careers they wanted after service. And if they never served were still able to pursue some careers and had good standards of living. :{

Oh right, like the shower scene disappointed you!
reply
5 ups, 1 reply
I was in 7th grade when I saw it in theaters and I liked it before I read the book.

The film simply can't hold a candle to the novel.

But those shower tits and later tent tits were nice.

The film is still entertaining and I still watch it about once a year. But if you read the book you'll be disappointed too. :{

Now I want to watch the movie again!!! The book I have is waaaaaay,... old! Your eml had me looking for it yesterday,.. I even went in my attic! lmao! Couldn't find it though! I'm pretty sure Heinlein wrote that book in the 50's... which made it even more cool when I read it! What a concept! I loaned that book to a dozen guys probably,.. whom all read it in a few days. I want to find it now!
reply

Watch the director's cut. It's got some deleted scenes added back in. But if you get to, watch the anime BEFORE the 1997 film. You'll see how the anime influenced the film.

Yeah it was published in 1959. He was commenting on the last few wars and his experiences in the military.

But his ideas for orbital drop troopers is actually being implemented slowly into the military. The USMC have been developing orbital drop troopers ever since the novel came out. And Bumgardener's jump is just another small part of it. They want an orbital craft that can take off from the US and drop troops into any combat zone in the world within a few hours of take off. Which would change warfare dramatically.

Also, powered armor has been in development since the book caught on with the military. And the USMC/Army often cite SST as the inspiration for their programs.

Most people always assume Halo is the reason, but they don't get that the Halo series is just a ripoff of the SST novel and films.

I hope you can find your book though bro. It's a great read. :{

'm sure, and I'm sure it works well for your country, but there are vast differences between the two. There are vast differences between the various areas of this country, plus yours is not trying to adapt something like that while already 19 trillion plus dollars in debt. There is no question we cannot afford the idea any time in the near future. Investments here have to be made in other areas before something like that can become a reality and when are not continuing to export all of our jobs out of the country.

I've no doubt about that. Countries with free healthcare and/or education were generally built around principles that made it work. Take a look at capitalist giant, Germany: remarkably cheap to free education, and they're economy is relatively unaffected. That's because, and may my teachers smite me if I'm wrong, they've been prioritising higher education since the mid 70s, an idea adapted nationwide from the Western half of Germany. I think that most economies in nonemergent nations is too "set in stone" to adapt dynamic changes.
reply
7 ups, 1 reply
Agreed, it is a higher priority in other countries. Also part of what you see as protest against the free education is that in American universities (and I have to admit ignorance here for other countries) it is largely viewed as a 4 year party and that the education is secondary. We really do have a lot to work out and a lot of it because we have gone from a more conservative society to a lot more liberal society. That transformation has left a lot of casualties as far as how our society functions.
reply
[deleted]
8 ups, 1 reply
Yeah, I have noticed a lot of memes from, I can only assume, the conservative Americans equating socialism to communism and treating college as a place not for higher education to increase employability, but as a party or liberal training camp. It isn't really that education is being shunned as it is "look at these little frat kids, just trying to party all night and sleep all day using my taxes". I just write off that way of thinking as "Oh, that's just America being America" sadly.

Again, this is my generalisation towards American conservatism (or is it 'Conservative Americanism'?). I'm not saying it's correct.

Metaphorically speaking, it's like watching one of those old people yell racist/xenophobic slurs, and everyone is like "Oh, Olaf's telling those German kids to go back to Naziland again. Silly Olaf." Also, that was a simile, not a metaphor, but idk is "similetically" or anything of the sort is a real word.

[Tangent intensifies]

But I digress

Some of you may know that I have a part time janitor job at a church. I was there today for ten hours. There was an event called Justice In The Workplace. When I was outside making my way around the grounds picking up trash I saw a shit load of cars with Bernie bumper stickers on them. Naturally I thought that the event was a forum about getting free shit from your employer. Later when I was working near the hall that they were in I could hear what the speakers were selling, and I was kind of surprised. Some of the talk was about forming unions. Personally I think that organized labor can be a good thing. They were also mentioning about making entrances wheel chair accessible and handicapped parking places in an employee parking lot. If a person is handicapped and out there working, good for them. It's a lot better then sitting at home collecting benefits. Not exactly what you guys are talking about. But I was pleasantly surprised that so many Liberals were not ranting about entitlements. Just thought that I would throw that out there.

Joining the military is not necessarily the only way to make a contribution, but the value and necessity of contribution is a fact of life. Regardless of our disagreements about the issues of our military, it is imperative that we extend due honor to our service people. Do not many of them join for at least some idea of "service?" When their care is not made a priority, and, in fact, even neglected, the sign of our demise is at hand.

The U.S. war in Iraq has cost $1.7 trillion with an additional $490 billion in benefits owed to war veterans, expenses that could grow to more than $6 trillion over the next four decades counting interest, a study released on Thursday said.
reply
5 ups, 2 replies
Ok... if true.. (I'm not looking it up)... so what? Evil exist in the world and we need a military and we should take care of our vets. If spending is an issue with you.. meme about the waste and fraud in welfare, the $$ that go to care for illegal immigrants, and the billion $ unaccounted for by Hillary as SoS to rebuild mosques overseas, and these countless welfare operations that get abused by generations of lazy people. Start with real waste.. defending the country and taking care of vets who get a college fund they earn.. is better than getting a college fund for crossing the border illegally.
reply
4 ups
Yeah, we bomb our enemy's mosques (training facilities) then rebuild them out of "compassion" and we expect to win a war like that.
reply
4 ups, 2 replies
You are delusional my friend. Do you think the movie Team America: World Police is meant to be taken seriously? We can't afford to "take care of our vets". Once they come back from multiple tours all f**ked up in the head, that's for life. They ain't going to college. Your meme is complete bullshit. "Free" college isn't free. The point is if you are going to spend billions of dollars, spend it on something that benefits people here at home, like higher education and healthcare for our citizens. The money already exists, it's just a matter of not being "at war" with "evil" (which means we just want their stuff). The U.S. military has turned into the worlds largest bunch of MERCS and it's a disgrace to real veterans of ACTUAL wars that our soldiers are being used as the tools of billionaires and oil company executives.
reply

Imgflip police. Is there a problem?
reply
3 ups, 1 reply
If we can't afford to take care of our vets, then "higher education and healthcare for our citizens" is probably out of reach, seeing there are millions more people living here then there are vets. But if "The money already exists", then we can take care of our vets, regardless of their condition when they return.

If you don't want this endless cycle of war, maybe we should just vote out ALL the rascals in Washington, instead of keeping those we THINK are on our side.
reply
2 ups
The sad thing is that we CAN afford to take care of vets. We just choose not to. Once we're done with them, they get neglected. It's disgraceful. Republicans and Democrats are equally guilty. We can also afford a true national healthcare plan, and public universities, but we choose to spend an unfathomably huge chunk of our money on war. It's really that simple, and yes, it is a choice that is made for all of us by a small group of wealthy elite. I sounded harsh above, and for that I apologize, but I won't apologize for seeing misinformation spread around! Why would the wealthy want an educated populace? Better to keep'em dumb and uninformed with no options but to sign up for the meat grinder.
