Trust me, we know the Bible more than you do, and that's part of the reason we don't believe in God.

You're a reasonble fellow,... with my respect always. I find (personally,.. not speaking for all Christians), that many anti-theist of christianity, seem to cherry pick verses that discredit Gods love,... such as scripture (usually) from the old testament, rather than the bible as a whole. I can't deny the wisdom I have found in the bible myself. And it also saved me from going down a wrong path. It was my own study,.. not anyone elses that helped me. If the Boble can have such a positive influence,.. and it does for well over a billion people,... isn't that a good thing?

I try my best to acknowledge the positive messages. And I do also acknowledge the fact that the positive messages have lead to many good deeds. But we musn't ignore the majority. Some people use it.

I don't know if you're lying or not, but your claim that atheists know the Bible better than Christians doesn't match my experience.

Cool thing was,... when we prayed,... they would join us in support just to be a brother! To be honest,... I never met a "rude" atheist until joining this site. They were all cool like you,.. we discussed,.. never insulted.

Thank you, brother! That really does mean a lot to me! :)

You're more rude than us, look at the ratio of anti-atheist memes to anti-theist memes.

1:0.1
reply
7 ups, 1 reply
I don't keep up with those ratios brother. If I don't agree with a meme,... I smile and move on and don't comment,... I don't feel the need to let someone know I "don't agree with your meme". I let the people who are like minded enjoy it. Thanks for the comment bro! =)

Because like the Bible tells us, no one is without excuse.

You're happier believing that when you die you cease to exist and that in essence your existence is meaningless as opposed to believing you will live in paradise for eternity when you die?

To each his own, I guess.
reply

I don't believe things because they give me comfort. I believe things because I believe the evidence supports them. I don't believe in an afterlife because I don't believe the evidence supports that. If it's true that there is no heaven and when I die I just rot away, then so be it. I won't believe in heaven just because it gives me comfort, if I'm not convinced that the evidence points to it.

TL;DR I believe what is supported by evidence, not what makes me feel comfortable

Like I said, more depressing. At least to me, it seems depressing to be an Aetheist. Even if you're correct, you would lose nothing by following Christian values. However, if you're wrong, wouldn't you have a lot to lose. I mean it seems pessimistic to wake up and (albeit subconsciously) tell yourself life is meaningless. That's how I see it anyways.
reply
5 ups, 1 reply
Three points to respond to.
1. You'll have to explain what you mean by "Christian values". As far as I can tell, there are no values that are exclusive and unique to Christianity

2. You're correct. If I'm wrong I would have a lot to lose. But if you're wrong about (insert any other religion), you would have a lot to lose. Pascal's Wager is not a good argument to use since it can be used against you as well.

3. Life may be inherently meaningless, but I can (and do) give it meaning :)

Watch GOD's Not Dead and read Isaiah 25:8-12. Hopefully that'll clear some things up.
reply
1 up
Btw in case you don't have a Bible, Isaiah 25:8-12 8 he will swallow up death forever. The Sovereign LORD will wipe away the tears from all faces; he will remove his people’s disgrace from all the earth. The LORD has spoken.
9 In that day they will say, “Surely this is our God; we trusted in him, and he saved us. This is the LORD, we trusted in him; let us rejoice and be glad in his salvation.” 10 The hand of the LORD will rest on this mountain; but Moab will be trampled in their land as straw is trampled down in the manure. 11 They will stretch out their hands in it, as swimmers stretch out their hands to swim. God will bring down their pride despite the cleverness of their hands. 12 He will bring down your high fortified walls and lay them low; he will bring them down to the ground, to the very dust.

This film had the best warning when I saw it on TV years ago - "The following film contains strong language, violence and scenes of demonic possession".
reply

Damn bro... I didn't get any notifications on comments,.. thought this wasa dead meme,.. looked,.. and a thread is going! I don't have ONE notification. This has been happening a lot,.. a few others have expereinced it too. Yeah,... that movie has a cult following! Who ever heard of a warning from the film industry,.. (largely anti-religion anyway) of "demonic posession"?? WTF right?? I dated this chick short time,... that movie was coming on and I said: "Cool,... lets watch it". She wanted to bless the TV and pray 1st,... kind of freaked out. So I took the high road and watched something else with her. That movie still freaks people out,.. it's a 70's movie I think too!

I've never once heard an atheist suddenly believe in God just to have someone to blame for something :l
reply
5 ups, 2 replies
It's not that they suddenly believe, it's that some will tell you they dont believe in God then use God actions in the OT as a reason why they dont believe... "i dont believe in God cause he's mean" kind of a you can't have it both ways situation. YMMV:)

You bring up an excellent point on and those are the dirt in which the seed did not not will it bare fruit. Same thing I've told those who were in ministry with me: "Can't have one foot in church and one in the world. I chose to leave church.

I'm a retired Christian Radio Producer/Host, ordained Youth Pastor and Worship Minister, but have since renounced the Light Side of the Force. And since I went Rogue, the things that kept me blind in church, have helped mold me.

I stronglysensed 'angels' in the room when my baby died before I knew it. God did not kill him, but evil things happen. I grew up in a non Christian home, btw, and have lots & lots of people rescued out of horrible situations because they were open to it. I do know that some kids from Christian families choose the other direction--maybe from seeing hypocrisy. The tribes & cities under God's severe judgement were like Hitler, only worse, and they were warned for many years first. They regularly sacrificed babies, etc, into a furnace with va**na opening, etc. that's not God being jealous in the bad sense.

Your opinion is from reading the bible in its entirety? Or is there a verse you are referencing?
reply
1 up, 2 replies
Read the Old Testament with an open mind (that is, as if you were not raised that it was "good" and "true" from before you could read).
To see clearly, when reading it, replace instances of "God" or "Lord" with "Cthulhu" or "Beelzebub", or and see if there is any difference in your perceptions of the actions ascribed to the god therein.
reply

ive read cover to cover,... and reference it (not as often as I would like) on ocassion. Reading,... does not mean "memorize"... though I wish I could. I got a lot out of it! Still do. I read proverbs at times and think,.. "Wow,... what wisdom for thousands of years ago!"
reply
0 ups, 1 reply
I was raised in a non Christian & I know many people who also weren't. I know the difference & it was a clear choice.
reply
0 ups, 1 reply
Read the OT and replace "God" and "Lord" with "Satan" or "Cthulhu" as you read it-- you wil notice that many, many, many of the same actions by the god therein suddenly seem evil.
reply
0 ups, 1 reply
That is a very odd argument & I don't buy it. I know the bible very well.
reply
0 ups, 1 reply
It's not an argument, it's a challenge. If you don't want to do it, it's fine, it is just something very eye-opening to do-- it is very hard to try and justify many of the actions of the god therein as "good" after doing the challenge.

Well ok. Just so you're not saying that the Allies were evil to kill millions of people--including babies--to stop Hitler.
reply
0 ups
No, because the Allies
1) were not allegedly omnipotent
2) did not actively target babies and children for slaughter

Children killed in war are a terrible result of war, and it is never right, but is a human limitation. Children targeted and killed by an alleged omnipotent god are victims of a demon.
