What I think what happened is this: He thought the recoil was going to push him backwards. So he was bracing himself to push forwards. Since the rocket pushed him forward, combined with him pushing himself forward, that's what pushed him over. :)

Tek is right. The bazooka, SMAW, and a few other rocket launchers are all "recoilless" meaning the back is open so that the forward and backward force neutralize each other and therefore have "no recoil". Although, they do push backwards a slight amount.
