MythBusters did an episode where they capped off the pressure relief valve on a water heater. It was put inside a small two-story structure built to residential building code. It had a floor above it and a roof. The pressure finally built up enough to rupture the water heater. The bottom of the water heater blew out, and the entire upright, can portion of the water heater blasted through the second floor and the roof. It went several hundred feet up in the air.
