It says basically make it so that with one stroke of the knife, make the kids able to equally share the apples. The joke is that to solve this you could use your one stroke of the knife to kill one kid so each kid has an apple.

There are two apples and three kids. There are two ways to do this with one stroke of a knife. The more sensible option is cut both apples in half with a long enough knife, and throw one half in the fridge for later. Each kid gets one half.
