I do get how in the 90’s, there weren’t nearly as many video games as there are now. So people could only play a select few titles depending on the platform they chose. That means there wasn’t a lot to compare with, and everything was new.

That doesn’t take away from the fact that it’s a bad game by today’s standards. And I’ve played plenty of games from the 90’s that are just fine despite being old.

I will say I did enjoy Black Mesa, but it still suffered a lot of similar issues with the health system, hitscan enemies, and trial-and-error design.

half life 2:

what do you mean? HL1 was just "escape facility shoot aliens and army" with terrible models by our standards, while HL2 + episode 1 and 2 are both really good games

At least Half-Life 1 doesn’t force you into unskippable story sections where all you can do is jump around and wait.

is that your only complaint about it? because I don't think that makes it worse

It has all the same problems as HL1 plus that.
