Here's a little theory, after the genocide run, when you meet chara, i think you are looking at frisk being possessed, Chara was awakened and took control of frisk, and now is standing infront of YOU, not frisk

And they slash YOU, plus how would they gain a knife out of nowhere?

The Red Soul symbolises you, for example why does Kris take out their soul in Deltarune? He isn't taking out his soul, he is taking out YOU so he can command by himself
