I didn't always catch him, but I'll always remember one time when he brought up Britney Spears at a time her life was at total disarray. Just the mention of her name, and the audience was already laughing. But he says, "no, no" and continues on about how he had been there, deep in the tangle of alcoholism, and that what she needed at the moment was understanding.
I found that very touching as the message mattered more than a quickie cheap laugh to him.
