If it weren't for the symbiotes, Dr. Octopus, the clones or Norman Osborn, the writers of Spider-Man wouldn't have any story lines.

I've actually made up stories in my head where the symbiotes play a MAJOR role. Like one where Spiderman died and Venom is the only thing keeping him alive, an alternat universe where Peter Parker didn't care about Uncle Ben (continued wrestling job) and Venom became spider-man, one where Venom is world leader and Peter is bonded with Carnage to be "Red Spider"

Now THOSE story lines actually sound pretty cool! :-) Maybe you ought to write them :-)
