Knight was in denial about the racism too in a discussion a while back.
"I don't doubt that Mormon missionaries are nice, but I always have to keep in mind that they're being nice at least in part because they're trying to get me to convert to their religion, which is their number one goal.
The ones in my building never discussed it with any other residents that I am aware of (even though I saw them also in pairs talking to people on the street round the neighborhood). They were just rather decent neighbors. It's a building of mostly college students, so compared to them especially, they were quite a relief.
The first Mormon missionaries I had ever seen were in PR in the late 80s. A very pleasant newlywed couple that bred Chow Chows of all things in that heat! Real nice people as well, but I never heard them preaching. If my cousin didn't tell me, I wouldn't have known (they were transplants from Utah). They'd be with the dogs in the front yard and were easily approachable, talking about the dogs or whatever you want.
Howard Hughes was very specific about hiring Mormons as assistants, admiring their dedication and work ethic and trustworthiness more than others.
I feel bad poking their beliefs, because they are pretty cool.
