He planned that line out for around 15 years. At first he wanted to make a big speech, but he finally decided on that line. The original book was written like it was a re-write, done by a man who had supposedly listened to his father read it to him as a kid. The book is full of comments, where the author talks about all the pages he “took out”.

I actually haven't read the book, but I do know that it significantly was less comedy based than the movie, and more focused on romance.
