Can You Please Upvote, Please

Just an FYI, focus on making better memes before you start asking for upvotes. The kitten is cute, and I'm commenting, so I paid the upvote tax.

Now, for the critique: I went through your profile. That's standard for anyone begging for upvotes. One reason why so many begging for upvote memes get downvoted. It took you over a month to make 19 memes. By now, you could have had about 60. (2 a day) Shows that you don't want to work for your points. In fact, 3 of those 19 memes/GIFs refer directly to upvotes.

Second: Comments. 11 comments? that sends a message to other users that you don't like to give upvotes yourself. Many will figure why bother giving you upvotes if you don't want to give upvotes on their memes. This is social media, here: The politics of socializing is important.

You want points? You need to earn them. Here's how.

Go to Page one and upvote and comment on each post there. It doesn't have to be super witty. An "I love this" or other positive comment is sufficient. Use a meme comment now that you have enough points to do that. Meme comments tend to receive more points than textual comments. If you can create a good enough meme in the comments section, don't be afraid to post it as a submission. Just remember, it has to be funny on it's own. This is how you build your fan base. Top meme makers get to know you, they get to like you. People see your funny comments and memes in other people's posts, they go and check out your memes. Remember I said that I checked your profile? I went through your memes. I found two that were worthy of upvotes. The third one I upvoted was one I thought I had upvoted when I commented on your spelling and grammar. That's the upvote tax: I commented, I should leave an upvote.

Don't be afraid to upvote others. It doesn't cost anything.

Right now, I'm in the top 100 users on imgflip. Why? because I try to post entertaining things. I actually had two page one posts this week. Why? Because they were good posts? Yeah, but also because I am building a fan base. People know me. They have come to understand that I am here to entertain as much as possible, and they look forward to my posts. They also know that I pay the upvote tax when commenting. They also know that I upvote a lot of memes I don't even comment on. (I upvote over 80 a day of just featured memes)

Thanks, DayRick. I've been using the upvote tax phrase for a long time, but I'm pretty sure I heard it from someone else. Still, like you, I had to figure out a lot of this as I moved along on the internet, from the days of Prodigy and AOL, through Usenet, on thru the WWW. The kid has a decent vocabulary for a 13 year old, but lack of reading comprehension skills may cause trouble for OP in the future. This may be OPs most popular submission for years, and (s)he may never figure out why.

Begging for upvotes? There's a right way and a wrong way. If I mention that I need ### to hit a specific goal, within a half hour, I usually hit that goal. Last time I did that, was when imgflip upgraded the system and didn't feature my memes until the next day. Seriously. I went into the day with less than 3,000 points needed to hit half a million. I was holding back on my third submission, but I had a thanks for half million meme ready to go. I easily do 3K a day, so I shouldn't have had to beg, right? By 9PM EDT, the two memes I'd posted hadn't featured. I wanted to hit that mark by midnight, so I submitted a regular meme, not an upvote beg. It featured right away. at 11:30, it had whittled the 3K needed down to 500 needed. I started commenting, meme commenting, on everything. mentioned in a reply to a friend that I was (by that point) less than 200 points from hitting the mark by midnight my time. at Midnight, I had 500,200+ points. When I commented on this meme, I was at 597,000 (+/- 1,000) I've gotten about 6K points today. No begging, just commenting and posting 3 memes. Of course, my 2 page one entries are still drawing votes and comments, even though they've left the page on their way down to page 10, but they're still getting action.

I hope the kid takes my advice and checks out ghost's tips page. There's some potential here, otherwise I wouldn't have said anything, and just ignored the post. I wouldn't have even upvoted it. As it is, they youngster is going to see that, while none of the comments here will generate as many upvotes as the meme did, his lack of upvoting people commenting on his memes leaves his own comments without upvotes. Until you showed up, I don't think a single comment was upvoted. I had left it that way to show that OP wants upvotes, but doesn't want to give them. I do have to chuckle at his comment about how he's upvoted 80 memes since he started. I'm currently upvoting more than that a DAY. and that doesn't count comments and replies

I never said I was a nice adult. In fact, if you looked at my profile, you'll discover that half the time I'm a hopeless romantic, and the rest of the time, I'm an asshole. All this while, you doubled your points here on imgflip. Just think, you got as many points in 24 hours as you did in an entire month. That's not bad for where you were standing two days ago. I'd like to see you do more than that each day. I think you found your niche: the animated GIFs. (for the record, Bill Gates was Dabbin, not Dabbing ;-} Doesn't matter, most of us old timers wouldn't know the difference due to youth jargon)
