To be fair, Hernán Cortés was very determined. After the Spaniards were trapped in an alleyway where their horses could not give them the advantage, the Mexica wiped out alwost 2/3 of the Spainish men. However, it wasn't their objective to kill all the men in an army like the Europeans did, so they left Cortés when he fled. This was a mistake, as he took great effort in rallying up the Tlaxcala to make ships an rise up against Tenochtitlan.
But in the end, the multiple pandemics wiped out most of the Mexica people anyway.
