Then why bring up politics in the first place? People may get too interested in earthly things regardless of whether they are conservatives, liberals or communists. Even Christianity doesn’t neglect it as many pastors have very earthly goals and justify them by claiming God would reward them in this way.
Your analogy is flawed. You want to present the opposites — the material and the spiritual — but compare it to conflict of different cults, equally pretending to have spiritual supremacy. Both had cruel practices which we would consider unacceptable. Also back then the polytheists would be the conservatives, since it was monotheistic cult of Yahweh that came later.
