You actually get something called "phantom pain." This pain is real, but it seems like an illusion because it occurs in the missing limb. You may also feel like your limb is actually still there. Researchers aren't sure what causes phantom pain, but many believe it is a miscommunication between the limb and the nervous system, or it may be that your body is adjusting to the significant change and trauma. You can also feel pain in the stump, or the remaining part of the limb that wasn't amputated. This is different from phantom pain, however. My point is, you actually feel pain in the missing limb.
