In China, the eating of cats and dogs has been a contentious and divisive issue. Yes, in certain regions and among certain populations, the consumption of dog meat (and, less commonly, cat meat) has been customary practice or local tradition, but it is not widespread nationwide. The practice is on the decline, particularly in urban areas and among younger generations, as attitudes towards pets, animal rights, and awareness regarding animal welfare remain in transition.
In recent years, there has been increasing public disapproval of consuming dog and cat meat, and several large Chinese cities, including Shenzhen and Zhuhai, have formally banned the trade and consumption of dog meat. In addition, in 2020, the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture formally shifted the status of dogs from livestock to pets, a shift in the government's stance on the issue.
