Good point! This meme is mostly me venting, but my argument goes: 1) suffering becomes a sense of purpose and privilege the more it is internalized by the sufferers ourselves, what Nietzsche called the “ascetic ideal.” An example would be 2017 Tumblr and media depiction of mental illness: it somehow gives you “depth” and “sensitivity” that is a privilege. Imagine: when someone declares their mental illness, it tend to invokes sympathy by default. (This is not to say we the mentally ill isn’t disadvantaged elsewhere in life. 2) It is a privilege to apologize for your privilege.
Therefore it is desirable to identify as the one who’s apologizing instead of the vulnerable, selfish-seeming victim that tells the truth about what we really need but will never ultimately have: sympathy.
