There is a lot of debate about how to teach programming in K-12. Learning the syntax of programming languages is a well-documented challenge. However, the debate ignores that children also have to learn math, which implies learning the syntax of math expressions. Well, there is an overlooked computing environment that requires very little more than knowing math expressions: spreadsheets! Yes, spreadsheets are a programming environment, as computer science researchers know well. Moreover, spreadsheets can be made as powerful as advanced programming languages.
