His real name is Miles Prower (a play on the term "Miles Per Hour", a measurement of speed), but when he met Sonic for the first time during the events of Sonic The Hedgehog 2 on the SEGA Megadrive/Genesis, he was given the nickname "Tails" for the plain to see reason of him being born with two tails, which is not normal for foxes. The name Tails has stuck with him ever since.
