It's not a wild hunch. If you do a little digging, the official explanation (Zuni rocket fired from f4) is a bit questionable. Who was piloting the f4? Why weren't they mentioned in the record? Why did that pilot take the necessary THREE steps to arm and fire the rocket before he was even airborne? McCain claimed the rocket hit his aircraft while the Navy says it was the one next to him... Or was it just some young cowboy fighter pilot showing off before a combat sortie? Nah, no possibility to apply Occam's Razor here /s
