Can you do the calculations of how much he started with & what he has now? I would like to know what his profitability was, since I don't know.

I did soon after that statement. They were not very encouraging about Trump.

Do you factor in the corporate welfare, subsidies, and tax breaks?

Also he'd be way richer had he done virtually nothing: http://www.moneytalksnews.com/why-youre-probably-better-investing-than-donald-trump/

I think he is an opportunist & certainly knows how to use taxpayer money. I saw the same article, but don't think I got enough pro Trump opinion elsewhere. I wasn't seriously looking at him before. He was born with a silver spoon, but so was Dubya. One thing he is, and that is quite the character!

He personally has not gone bankrupt, ever. What do people not understand about this? Businesses fail sometimes, shit happens, file chapter 11 and move on. Would everyone prefer he ran his businesses like the fed operates? Get bailouts? What? There are plenty of reasons to not like the guy but a few failed casinos and hotels out of 90 or 100 or whatever is still a very successful record.

I googled "trumps bankruptcies explained" and this was litterally the first hit:

http://www.thestreet.com/story/13286068/1/the-backstory-on-donald-trump-s-four-bankruptcies.html

Its not difficult folks

If the Republicans nominate him, is it not going to come out more and more about his mediocre handling of finances? He just did not do very at considering where he started. I like that he is not financially "owned" by contributors, but that is not enough.

Romney is calling for trumps tax records. So it's not a current candidate looking to mess him up. IF he is nominated the democrats win. Even if Bernie wins the nomination. It's a lock. The establishment republican voters won't vote for him. The gop is a very splintered party. I think the democrats are a bit more cohesive and will support either bernie or hillary....at least more so than trump will garner voters from the other camps.
2 ups, 9y
I agree. Being myself a Republican (not officially, but I share their views), I would vote for the Democratic candidate if Trump gets the nomination.

Demographics are going to push politics farther left in the coming decades I think. Advantage: Democrats.

If that information was available, don't you think JEB! or TED! or MARCO! would've used it by now?

It's available ( http://www.moneytalksnews.com/why-youre-probably-better-investing-than-donald-trump/) but has a major snafu: had he merely invested his inheritance he'd be way richer. BUT (here's the snafu) the markets always do better under democrat presidents.

See the problem there?

Nope. I used to be a financial planner and I know how those charts are manipulated. I'm not that easily fooled. I also know that the president (or party in power) has zero to do with the performance of the markets. I've been around far too long to fall for that one.

Presidents don't have a huge direct effect on markets but it's correlation. Like gas prices. They have zero to do with them but get the blame and sometimes credit. (Blame for obama, credit to Bush....weird right?)

So no smart republican will draw attention to the fact someone could get rich on the market when the correlation (causation or not) is there to help the democrats.

Just remember, correlation does not mean causation. Remove one president… Bill Clinton… Who was lucky enough to have been elected because of Ross Perot, and was lucky enough to be president during The Internet boom and that correlation virtually evaporates.

That's what I said. BUT the facts are facts and no gop candidate will draw attention to it for that reason.

Should they bring attention to the "fact" that luck has a lot to do with it, and that Republican Congress's have a lot to do with a successful stock market ... like your link says?

It's too much info for the typical gop voter base. The dems will push who was president....it's easier to digest. It's a weird problem. Like gas prices....like I said.

An uneducated populace is a great asset to either party.

My old stats professor used to say "Figures never lie, but liars figure."
1 up, 9y
I have never heard that one. Voters are angry and frustrated, so maybe a vote for Trump is an effective reaction to the superabundance of lies on all sides.
1 up, 9y
Funny, that.

It's more about ammunition for the Democrats...and there surely is ammunition. I don't think the other republicans want to deride a "successful" businessman. He's just mediocre.
2 ups, 9y,

That's wrong.... Of course the republicans are desperately trying to take Trump down...
3 ups, 9y,

The republicans are now in a very bad position. I think if Trump did lose their nomination that there's an excellent Chance he will run independently, and the republicans lose also. And I still don't think republicans dare say much about a businessman. I'm not saying Trump might not (in practical terms) be the best president in 2017... I'm undecided and I'm looking to vote for the best of the bad at this point.

The funny thing is, trump supporters have always been there. They finally have a candidate that speaks for them rather than "settling" on someone that wasn't as perfect for them. If he wins (or even if he doesnt) it shows the gop majority base really is a bunch of racist, hateful, uneducated people for the most part.

I would give many of them more credit than that. Tired of owned politicians? Uh...I don't know that most are racists...they might be influenced by other factors.

Trump isn't funding his own campaign.

Bernie has his big contributors too. I am surprised the navy and air force are so big of contributors.
