English degrees are not useless, many jobs simply require a minimum of a four year degree and could care less what field it's in. For instance my brother has a degree in Theater (Stage Performance), he applied to the FAA to be an air traffic controller, got the job and now has a $%^&pile of money. I'm about to finish a degree in Computer Science and my chances of finding a decent job with that degree are much higher, as opposed to the English degree that I couldn't find a decent job with after a year of applying for any I could find that only needed a 4 year degree. There's a reason the joke about English majors flipping burgers exists. Some people get lucky, but most of us don't. I'm happy your brother was able to find a great job with his degree, but the majority of the time that doesn't happen.
