What MasterofPun is wondering about may not be answered by invoking natural selection. The process of natural selection doesn't require mutations or millions of years.

Na - natural selection wouldn't iron out the mutations that take place over that long. Look at where we are over the few thousand years we have recorded - and humans have had noticable genetic mutations. If the world were millions of years, old, life would have died of mutation long ago - like VERY long ago.
