Yeah it doesn't break any submission guidelines, as far as I can see. I guess there's no harm in asking a mod why (although they might not answer). Or you could just remake a similar meme, down the track.

Your view of reposts are bullshit. Anybody that's been on imgflip longer than a year can say that reposts are the single most annoying thing to ever exist. Even worse than IceCube, ISISMemes, and a whole lot more. They show that the creator is either a. stupid, b. not creative, or c. just mean. And yes, before you say it, I am aware that some reposters have noble intentions, as you said and I quote,
"we don't know motives - there could be good motives for a person doing the same thing (e.g. it could be because they enjoy the joke and want to share it again, or they think they can make it slightly better because it fits a different template better, or they have some other idea about it - and those are legitimate things to do with memes)."

That is a great point, and I have done that plenty of times! I often find hilarious posts from iFunny and many other places on the web, so I share them. But, as you damn well know, there are people that do NOT intend to do good with these reposts. They use them for point steals, for ego boosts, to boast, or even just because they want to start a flame war.

THOSE ones are the ones I can't stand.

Very good memes can often be completely ignored, because memes are only shown for a short time on the Latest stream, sometimes are buried even when they feature. And it may take a few reposts of the same good meme to even get noticed and recognized for its greatness. But that being said, yes there are memes that most memers will recognize. But remember too that there are new memers coming in all the time, and memers leaving. I joined in 2014. At that time, I would not have recognized memes that have been reposted for 10 years, and I enjoyed them as if they were new. I would have not recognized 'need an ark / i noah guy' the first time I saw it, even though that meme is at least a thousand years old. I have no problem with reposts, if users don't like it, if it is 'too soon' after a similar one, then often it will fail, it will either get downvoted, or it will not receive enough upvotes. I don't upvote reposts that I have seen recently. I don't have a problem with someone saying a repost is a repost, but it doesn't really add anything to say it either. Most memes here are reposts, just may not be obvious reposts, or popular reposts. I for one do appreciate creativity and the users who do more than just look up a joke and put it on a meme. I hope others do too, so we will get creative original memes to the front page, but they do need to be good too.

Unless it's an exact or close to it copy of a post i don't see a real problem there. YOu can take an original idea, tweak it and make it funny again. Like a Car; 4 wheels, engine, seats,frame, body. Same basic design but made a million different variations.

I tried reposting something once that was on the front-page at the time. It was not featured. But it seems if you repost something that is a bit older you will probably get featured. I don't think there's anything wrong with reposting, and I don't go on other sites so I might not recognize memes that are circulating elsewhere. No matter how many times I see it, everytime I see Buddy Christ's Noah's Ark joke, I laugh.

Yes as an experiment to see what would happen. I thought it would be featured and do badly.

The types of reposts that bring out the whiners are not always the obvious reposts that the Submission Guidelines are addressing.

It's the reposts that happen to get on the front page - hence the inference on the bottom panel of my meme.

Also, there's a big difference between reminding someone about the site's submission guidelines, and the kind of unnecessary vitriol that can come from the whiners - often even when it's not an obvious repost at all.

I haven't been doing this long enough to even recognize a repost. But you can use any number of templates to repeat the same information, just to be a d**k. Like "HAN DIES".
