I'm happy to see these memes.. I had another one pulled that was doing well and put back into submitted status. It was really climbing to. How does that happen.. someone request that?
reply
7 ups, 1 reply
I'm not sure. I had that happen on an anti-Trump meme I made.

It's possible that someone flagged it for some reason, and the mods pulled it, I guess. Another possibility is if it got enough downvotes, it might unfeature automatically.
reply
5 ups, 1 reply
well,.. it was not for downvotes,.. and it had already been approved,.. but I was getting trolled bad. . then the meme suddenly went into "submitted" file and was removed.
It was doing well on views, points and upvotes. imgflip.com/i/wv3e9#com429798

Oh yeah I remember that meme. I thought some of the stuff on it was pretty good discussion. It's a shame they pulled it.

It was racking up votes and comments,.. I'll check with a mod. I don't get it. My concern would be that anyone like the babylonian demon would disagree and have it flagged? I can't imagine a mod pulling it because someones feelings are hurt. I can't figure out why? Oh well...
reply
5 ups, 1 reply
Yeah it doesn't break any submission guidelines, as far as I can see. I guess there's no harm in asking a mod why (although they might not answer). Or you could just remake a similar meme, down the track.

Ok. Socrates, I'll be brutally honest, I don't like you. I never have, and I probably never will.

But regardless of my opinion on you, please take no offense to the following...

Your view of reposts are bullshit. Anybody that's been on imgflip longer than a year can say that reposts are the single most annoying thing to ever exist. Even worse than IceCube, ISISMemes, and a whole lot more. They show that the creator is either a. stupid, b. not creative, or c. just mean. And yes, before you say it, I am aware that some reposters have noble intentions, as you said and I quote,
"we don't know motives - there could be good motives for a person doing the same thing (e.g. it could be because they enjoy the joke and want to share it again, or they think they can make it slightly better because it fits a different template better, or they have some other idea about it - and those are legitimate things to do with memes)."

That is a great point, and I have done that plenty of times! I often find hilarious posts from iFunny and many other places on the web, so I share them. But, as you damn well know, there are people that do NOT intend to do good with these reposts. They use them for point steals, for ego boosts, to boast, or even just because they want to start a flame war.

THOSE ones are the ones I can't stand.

Nextly, I strongly disagree with the bottom half of this post. You labeled me as a "repost whiner", which means you are referring me to the bottom half. And boy, if there was a Top 5 Most Featured, I would be in it. You know nothing. You come prancing in here as a new account and shoot to the top faster than anyone, and before you know it, you've got dozens of users kissing your ass. (Don't deny it. Have you seen the comments? You and Raydog are the most over-glorified users in history.) I know see how the notorious DownvoteFairy felt about me. Holy shit, it's annoying.

So, to conclude, I'd like to say that not all reposters are being jerks; some of them have noble intentions. But if they don't, you do NOT have the right to label someone as a whiner.

TL;DR: Your post is shit, your opinions are shit, and you're shit.

Dude. I promise I'm not trying to start a flame war I really like both of you. But Socrates and Raydog are two of the most welcoming, friendly, good intended users I know. So yeah, Socrates did shoot up to the leaderboard really fast, mainly from commenting. And I can tell, from your perspective, it's annoying reposters put on memes while taking credit for something that isn't their idea. And basically that's what you've been trying to say. And what do you get? It's implied you're a repost whiner. But it's pretty childish to keep saying you've been on longer than anyone. Yeah, I haven't been on long. Between me, Socrates, Raydog, and a lot of other users combined can't reach the time you've been on. I'm not saying that you are, but it sounds a lot like a inferiority complex when you keep pulling the "I've been on longer than you" card, and say how successful you were. So yeah, I totally agree with you on the whole 'reposter intentions' idea, I just don't think it was cool how you went on from "and boy" up until "it's annoying". I personally don't like choosing sides, you just might want to try being a little more considerate. Please don't freak out at me, I have no idea how you're going to respond at this if you do...
reply
9 ups, 2 replies
First off, I appreciate that you're not trying to offend me.

Secondly, I pull that card not because I'm being a childish brat, (even though I probably still am), but because I'm trying to say that I have a broader view of what imgflip is. I call it being an Imgflip Veteran. Any other 1+ year old user on this website can say that there is a definite difference on how you view things such as reposts, trolls, or annoying users. Think of it as the human life cycle...

You new guys are little kids. You're not sure what you're doing but you enjoy it immensly.

People like socrates are the teens/young adults. They've got a pretty good idea of the website.

Now, people like me, XenusianSoldier, DownvoteFairy, InfernoKid, Entertainer28, and many other users are the grumpy old men of the imgflip universe. We watch from our rocking chairs on our front porches and make rude comments about how "annoying these damn kids" are. Old people have a much more different view than the little kids and young adults.
See what I mean?

Ah. Basically the same reason my friends hate on me for being a freshie. Gotcha. Basically you know the ropes, blah blah, I don't really need to explain, yeah. Btw I set my logo to the lowest one I actually joined last July, and I was on here and there before that. I remember looking at the weekly leaderboard and you were always top. Then I decide to make an account, look at the weekly leaderboard- no more corbinium11. So I checked the big leaderboard, check out your profile- retired Imgflip prodigy. It was pretty weird to see the site change in so little time. As for myself- I don't really want points, I'd rather just be known as a 'regular'. Like everybody kinda knows me, but I might not have the best memes. Actually, my memes are trash. xD. The I remember two posts from you before I made the account- some poem which I don't remember, and you saying that you were in a dark place before you found the site. Yeah. I appreciate the respect (one time I got all out spammed by trolls with satanist links, God isn't real, etc.), so yeah. I 'preciate you.

Lol I just saw this.

Scared of what? Your tantrum? LOL.

I didn't respond for the same reason people don't try to reason with a 2-year-old throwing a tantrum. There was nothing in it to respond to. You were just whining about random stuff you don't like. Your comment wasn't even necessary.

I'm sorry you're not a popular user anymore. If it's any consolation, one day Raydog and I won't be as popular on the site as we are now.

But hopefully, when that happens, you won't see us logging back in to complain about stuff we don't like about how the site's changed. If nothing else, your comment gave a good demonstration of how pathetic that is.
reply
3 ups, 2 replies
Okay. We can play that way.

My "tantrum", as you called it, is just me defending myself and pointing out a flaw in your meme.

Second off, do you honestly think I'm upset that I'm not popular anymore? B**ch please. I'm still the biggest name around here (besides Entertainer and now you and Raydog).
I'm not complaining because I'm not famous. I'm complaining because the website that I learned to know and love is going straight to hell because of people like you.

I miss the old imgflip. It saved my life. (Sounds classic, doesn't it? Xenusian talked me out of suicide about a year and a half ago). I miss the trolls. I miss IceCube and Isis and DownvoteFairy. I want that back. But you guys changed it. Now it's a narcissistic, butt-kissing platform for users to boost their pathetic egos.

I would apologize for upsetting you, but I hate you, so I won't. :)

Thanks for your answer.

I don't think you needed to defend yourself. The meme wasn't specifically about you. But OK.

If I read your comment wrong (about you being upset because you're not popular), sorry about that. That's what I guessed was your motivation, since you were talking about how fast I rose, and me and Raydog being over-glorified, etc.

I'm glad to hear you used to enjoy imgflip, and I'm really glad XS talked you out of suicide.

As for you hating me, I don't know what to say about that. I respect you as a meme-maker. I don't respect your views about imgflip much, but I could be wrong.

I hear what you're saying about being frustrated with how a site can change over time. I'm not really sure what you want me to do about that.

Very good memes can often be completely ignored, because memes are only shown for a short time on the Latest stream, sometimes are buried even when they feature. And it may take a few reposts of the same good meme to even get noticed and recognized for its greatness. But that being said, yes there are memes that most memers will recognize. But remember too that there are new memers coming in all the time, and memers leaving. I joined in 2014. At that time, I would not have recognized memes that have been reposted for 10 years, and I enjoyed them as if they were new. I would have not recognized 'need an ark / i noah guy' the first time I saw it, even though that meme is at least a thousand years old. I have no problem with reposts, if users don't like it, if it is 'too soon' after a similar one, then often it will fail, it will either get downvoted, or it will not receive enough upvotes. I don't upvote reposts that I have seen recently. I don't have a problem with someone saying a repost is a repost, but it doesn't really add anything to say it either. Most memes here are reposts, just may not be obvious reposts, or popular reposts. I for one do appreciate creativity and the users who do more than just look up a joke and put it on a meme. I hope others do too, so we will get creative original memes to the front page, but they do need to be good too.

Unless it's an exact or close to it copy of a post i don't see a real problem there. YOu can take an original idea, tweak it and make it funny again. Like a Car; 4 wheels, engine, seats, frame, body. Same basic design but made a million different variations.

I tried reposting something once that was on the front-page at the time. It was not featured. But it seems if you repost something that is a bit older you will probably get featured. I don't think there's anything wrong with reposting, and I don't go on other sites so I might not recognize memes that are circulating elsewhere. No matter how many times I see it, everytime I see Buddy Christ's Noah's Ark joke, I laugh.

The types of reposts that bring out the whiners are not always the obvious reposts that the Submission Guidelines are addressing.

It's the reposts that happen to get on the front page - hence the inference on the bottom panel of my meme.

Also, there's a big difference between reminding someone about the site's submission guidelines, and the kind of unnecessary vitriol that can come from the whiners - often even when it's not an obvious repost at all.

It's so much better here than on FB where the same tired memes seem to just circulate from one group of my friends to another. That's why I started coming here, at first to make my own, and then I realized how much fun the people here are. I see some memes I don't get at all, not that they are bad, I'm sure they make sense to somebody. But we all have different things we like, some people may like seeing the same meme but slightly different. Does that effect how much fun I have here, absolutely not. I have cried repost before when I was brand new here because it surprised me when I searched images to make a comment and found the exact same meme had been made multiple times. But after thinking about it, people were still enjoying that meme and who am I to tell them not to. I think the point socrates is trying to make is. We all have a lot more fun if we listen to our mothers, don't have anything nice to say, just downvote it and go find one you like to comment on.

I've got no problem with him. He was here before us and for all I know he's a pretty smart guy, so he probably has some insights.

And he's right that some people who repost a meme might be doing it for bad reasons (ie, to steal credit, get points, make themselves look more creative than they are etc). No argument there.

But the thing is, we don't know motives - there could be good motives for a person doing the same thing (e.g. it could be because they enjoy the joke and want to share it again, or they think they can make it slightly better because it fits a different template better, or they have some other idea about it - and those are legitimate things to do with memes).

So if we don't know if someone's motives for doing something are good or bad, it seems wrong to automatically assume the bad motive and accuse them of reposting in a bad way. Why not give people the benefit of the doubt? Where's the harm?

And also, I feel like one person saying something on each meme is enough (if at all). Some of these memes have 4-5 people (sometimes more) all pointing out it's a repost.

There are probably gray areas, or areas where it could be 50/50 whether something should be pointed out or not. But a lot of times, I'm presuming people are just saying it because they're jealous of someone else's meme getting a lot of upvotes when theirs didn't, and that's what my meme is trying to convey.
