The spread of Islam by force is a matter of historical fact. Whether or not the Quran contains a specific word doesn't refute the history of Islamic conquest.
And Muslims don't follow only the Quran, but also the Hadith (traditions about Mohammad's words and deeds). The Prophet Mohammad was not just a religious leader, but a military leader.
