It's been this century.. not that long ago. Civil rights act was in 1964. It was democrats in Congress opposed it.

Let's not act like southern democrats of yore were like the democrats of today. We can also say the Republicans freed the slaves. And that's about where they stopped for rights for African Americans.

I know plenty of people that vote across lines. Why would they vote for obama? Personally I was all for McCain but Palin was a deal breaker. She's as dumb as a box of rocks. It's like the GOP wants to lose.

I have travelled the country andnwoeld myself and that probablybhas moved my position as well. I was a co founder of the young republicans in high school. My position has moved a little to the left since then but the GOP has gone far to the right leaving me no option but to be (for the most part) a democrat. I'm registered independent. The party I knew as the Republican party abandoned me and many moderate/right Reagan Era republicans. Most of obamas actions would be considered conservative by 80s standards. Tax breaks for wealthy. No gun actions to speak of. Wall street bailouts and crony capitalism. Big corporate subsidies especially for fossil fuels. More oil drilling than ever...the list goes on. I'm not 100% onboard the Obama train BUT he's better than the lunacy on the right.

I don't think Mr. O'Donnell understands the difference between classic liberalism and modern liberalism. The Republican Party represents the classic version and Democrats the modern. The neo Marxist liberalism that democrats embrace had nothing to do with most of what Mr. O'Donnell claims credit for. Social security, Medicare, and the air and water acts are the only things in that list that were pushed with modern liberalism. Social security and Medicare are both disasters so if they want credit for those they can have it. The rest of what he claims credit for was passed by Republicans and opposed by Democrats. Now I see why MSNBC appeals to low information voters.

The House controls spending. Democrats controlled the House for 40 plus years. It was the Democrats that spent SS money to fund their social experiments. Many southern democrats like j William Fulbright also supported neo liberal ideas as well as things like segregation. Medicare is too expensive and doesn't deliver the level of care that it is supposed to. It also burdens future generations with a bill they can not afford to pay. Modern Liberalism, judge us by our intentions not our results.

Bush funded 2 illegal wars among other things with 708 billion in SS funds.... How much did LBJ use? SS is completely self funding. When not being raped, SS has no solvency issues.

The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq were not illegal. Unpopular yes, illegally no. SS does have a solvency issue. As our population continues to get older with fewer young people working to fund it the system will bankrupt all on its own. The number of people paying into the system vs. those drawing from the system is upside down. That is why both parties are desperate to bring in millions of new workers from other parts of the world.

Progressivists and conservatives are two opposed forces. They are necessary in order to find a balance. But if one of the two weighs too much, then things go wrong. Perhaps it was not the case in the past, but today, liberals weigh to much.
