We're well into Doc #12 and I'm STILL fuzzy about why #11 needed a completely different sonic screwdriver from #10's. What.....the screwdriver disappears when a Doctor regenerates???

Even though the doctor is the same person after each regeneration, his personality changes slightly. His tools (sonic screwdriver and tardis) are altered to fit his new personality. There's alot to make you go "huh?" So just repeat after me "wibbly wobbly timey wimey"

Actually, it was explained in "The Eleventh Hour" when his screwdriver was destroyed and repaired by the TARDIS. It got a total makeover; but basically it is the same tool.
