I don't think that we ever seriously claimed to be a peaceful nation.

That's the irony, they got France's back eve nthough their hands are full with THEIR own problems :D

Well, we can trace that back to WW I, WW II, Viet Nam, etc. You can also attribute it to the mentality of "don't let a good crisis go to waste". We'll do anything to gen up some good PR and whip up the low information voters in an election year. Nothing like a good war to keep the ruling party in power for another term.
