it's not that the water is being destroyed, but if it takes X amount of water to maintain the cattle then that water obviously isn't being used elsewhere, and that quite an issue in drought-stricken countries. the crop farms downstream of the cattle get less water and in turn the water catchment further downstream receives less water to be distributed to the towns
