There's a sense in which Christians are called to love people who hate God, because they are made in the image of God.

But there's a sense in which Christians are also called to "hate" (that is, to oppose the plans and purposes of) the people who hate God too, because they are his enemies.

That is the correct parsing of the word.

Why John 3:16?

Because it's there that we learn that God so loved the world that He sent His only Son to save it.

Oh, I agree with that. When the world and God go different ways, it's obvious who to follow. But let's not forget the multiple senses of both "hate" and "the world" that appear in Scripture. Theology by meme is hard to do clearly.

The most common mis-interpreted word in that verse is "so." It doesn't mean "so much" it means "in the same manner."

Even granting your premise, it doesn't change the main thrust of the citation: that God loves the world enough to have entered it and to suffer for it.

God loved world to enter in it to save sinners but God doesn't love the [things] OF the world...and as He clearly showed in this verse anyone who loves the world will be judged by Him
