his/her may be politically correct but you were right 1st time with "their". Of course we all care, what's the point in being a grammar nazi if you have nobody to persecute.

Actually, no, using "their" to refer to a nondescript gender is not grammatically correct, even though it is common usage. That's why linguists were following ghetto kids to see if their use of the word "yo" caught on as a proper replacement for "their". Too much NPR, but aaaanyway...
