Adam and Eve, who were the first humans to sin and therefore ruined humanity, were punished not because of their free will but because of disobeying God. God didn't want humans to be robots, and he said they could eat freely of any tree in the garden, except a single one. They could do absolutely anything else they wanted.
Think of God and Adam and Eve as you and your parents. Your parents don't expect you to obey them absolutely, to cater to their every whim. But they don't let you do every single thing you ever want, do they?
Satan, in the form of a serpent, twisted the words of God, tricking Adam and Eve and tempting them to disobey God. This original sin left a sort of "mark" on humanity which can only be cleansed by believing in God, accepting him as your savior because he died to pay for your sins, etc etc.
The point is, Adam and Eve DID have plenty of free will. They had as much free will as your parents allow you.
