Wow. Me, a democrat? Ha! I'm actually a stalwart American. I don't believe in political parties nor the current way we elect people to power.
I DO believe in gun control. I believe that the gun manufacturers are responsible for who sells their products. That those sellers have the responsibility to sell only to responsible, mentally-stable people. That those people would willingly submit to a background check to prevent weapons from falling into the wrong hands...and yes, this includes one's family as part of the check. Doesn't matter if you're okay if your brother is a flaming racist whakk job and lives under the same roof.
Over 600,000 weapons "disappear" from the homes of 'responsible' gun owners every year, because these people are too stupid to understand that the bad guys know EXACTLY where the gun stores are, also, and can just sit outside waiting for Johnny Redneck to come walking out with his new toys and then...oh, you know; follow him home. Then they come back later and since Mr. Responsible doesn't have a gun safe...they can just treat the house as Wal-Mart for guns. And they do.
Also, another 17,000 weapons a year just...disappear...from gun sellers, because, you know, they just leave the things laying around like shoes at Wal-Mart, right?
No, they're selling them illegally online.
So, 'responsible' gun owners are the NUMBER ONE source for weapons to bad guys. Fact: If you try and defend yourself with a weapon, you are FOUR TIMES more likely to end up a homicide opposed to doing nothing or escaping the house.
People who think having a hand gun will protect them don't realize what happens to the human body when put into a 'fight or flight' situation: the FIRST thing to go are all those fine motor skills you need to point a pistol at someone.
So the only thing that gets hit are other family members or walls. Then the bad guy kills you and takes your weapon, adding another one to the bad guys' side.
Of course, there are exceptions. If you came into my house with ill intent, you'd meet Mr. Tactical Arms Remington 870. Because for home defense nothing says "I'm very serious about this" than a shotgun. No fine motor skills needed.
But then, I'm a combat veteran, so through repeated exposure to actual bullets flying around, I've learned to control my reactions to 'fight or flight' and function at a ridiculously high capacity.
Then there are people like my brother-in-law...who owns over 30 weapons and is a huge bigot.
