It's a step up towards the rest of the world in terms of the quality of their healthcare systems, and it'll stop countless people from dying of easily treatable conditions because they can't afford treatment.

Yeah right! the National Gov't at most should have a noticeable, yet minor role in health care. Mentioning the healthcare system other nations(such as Canada, Finland, Sweden, Cuba) does not make you the winner, neither does it mean that America's universal Obamacare works. Why the hell should one be Penalized for not having insurance(though I admit the act acknowledges some exceptions)? Overall, its not about creating a brighter healthcare picture for the USA, its about the gradual communising of a nation.

I'd like you to give me one legitimate reason why mandatory health insurance is a bad thing. It won't affect those who don't need it, and it could save the lives of those who do.

Because it takes away their right to choose. Making it mandatory to have health insurance is plain taking away choice. Justices Clarence Thomas and Scalia are right in their utter criticism of it.

That's true, but it's not exactly a very major choice, and most reasonable people would probably choose to get insurance anyways...
