99 cents is cheap, but that was a long time ago. right now in Venezuela gas is around 5 cents a gallon for 97 octane (premium)

I remember when gas was 20 cents a gallon.

Yep. Back in the early 1970s, gas averaged 23.9 to 25.9 at the "name brand" stations and was as low as 19.9 at the "off brand" outlets, many of which don't even exist anymore, who were waging a price war against the big boys to try to cut into their customer base.

Of course, that didn't last long. The Nixon administration cooked up a phony "energy crisis" to distract the public from the Watergate scandal, and once the oil companies realized they could get away with jacking up their prices to at the time unheard of levels, they never looked back. I remember thinking it was outrageous when gas hit 50 cents a gallon. :-)
