It’s basically a sad (and also humorous) cartoon version of something that happens every Autumn. The non-evergreen tree’s leaves change colors and eventually die and fall off. This cartoon humanizes it and compares it to what people experience when a loved one gets older and passes away. I’m guessing that’s what it means anyway.
