"Shaun Chen’s China story hits the headlines. Media response: QUICK, SOMEBODY WRITE ABOUT POILIEVRE.
The Shaun Chen story is fascinating, strange and worthy of a LOT more questions.
Chen says he is resigning as the Liberal MP for Scarborough North because of significant health problems following a serious vehicle accident while travelling to Ottawa last fall. Reporting described his SUV as rolling off Highway 416 and ending up in a ditch. An OPP collision report has since been posted by journalist Glen McGregor confirming the collision occurred. So the accident is real.
But here is where the story gets weird.
Chen says the resulting health problems made travelling to Ottawa as frequently as an MP needs to difficult.
Yet from March 14 to March 22, he travelled all the way to China.
His office confirmed the trip. It says it was disclosed to the Ethics Commissioner and happened while Parliament was on break. The House returned March 23. And despite claims floating around online, there is no evidence he was secretly voting from China. That part appears false. (AM 800 CKLW)
But the China trip itself is real.
And it gets more interesting.
The trip was sponsored by the Hakka Canadian Association, chaired by Markham councillor Joe Li. Parliamentary IT apparently considered the China travel a “potentially high cybersecurity risk” and arranged a loaner tablet and temporary SIM for Chen. (CityNews Toronto)
Joe Li was also leading the Chinese Canadian Conservative Association when that organization publicly called for Pierre Poilievre to resign after the 2025 election. (The Bureau)
And in 2026, a Jamestown Foundation report mapping organizations it assessed as having connections to the Chinese Communist Party’s United Front system included the CCCA in its analysis. That does not prove Chen, Li or anyone else was taking orders from Beijing. But it certainly makes questions about these networks, relationships and travel legitimate. (Jamestown)"
