I looked up that description online. I think that the story that you’re referring to is “A Sound of Thunder” by Ray Bradbury. It was originally published in 1952, in Collier’s magazine. It has that exact same storyline.
I agree. It’s always that way. They can never outdo the imagination of the reader. They always take liberties with the original material, too. That story has been adapted many times. Even on a “Treehouse of Horror” episode of The Simpsons.
