The New York Times is reporting the company hired to install the water-purification system, Greenwater Services of Brookfield, Ohio, received a $1.7 million no-bid contract despite having almost no federal contracting history. Its ultimate owner is the J.J. Cafaro Investment Trust, led by John Cafaro, a Trump donor and Mar-a-Lago neighbor Trump has called a "fantastic man." Cafaro pleaded guilty in 2001 to conspiracy to bribe a U.S. congressman. The Interior Department says it was unaware of his political ties when it awarded the contract.
