I was going into this movie very curious. I had heard from people around me that it was good despite the marketing made it look really dumb. Then I heard the music playing in stores and around my fyp and thought it was catchy, yes, but kind of cringe and not my thing considering K-pop is literally the ONE genre of music I don't go out of my way to listen to (except Gangnam Style). I just assumed it was a bad-to-mid movie at worst and just kept calling it annoying. But hey, I'm not gonna be that guy to judge a movie before I see it, so I decided to take an hour and half of my time today to watch it. And I can confirm, it's ass.
For one, this movie may genuinely have one of the worst 1st acts I've ever seen period. It's so overstuffed and loud and annoying and made me cringe (in a really bad way) so, so, hard. It reminded me a lot of Saiki K with how fast the dialogue was and how it just wouldn't let you take a damn break. The 2nd act wasn't good either. The annoying anime trope of having chibi-like expressions and animations really got on my nerves and the villains really weren't that special either. Honestly, it was a relief when the main girl talked to the antagonist boy because the loud, annoying antics finally stopped and I could just focus on the quiet (but still not good) melodrama throughout the rest of the movie. That's another thing. how do so many people talk about how good the movie is but forget there's a frigin' liar reveal in the current year of 2025, and the other girls barely have time to react to it and the conflict is resolved instantly. But I gotta say, the 3rd act was great... because I was laughing so hard. Like, other than the liar reveal, the antagonist boy reveals his insanely predictable "true dark past" and he just... dies? Like, the movie wanted the two main characters together but he makes this heroic sacrifice that made me burst out laughing. Honestly, it was funny.
Let's talk about the other stuff now: For one, the animation. I thought it was cool I guess. Really nothing special compared to probably any other sony movie made in the 2020s so far (except wish dragon I guess). The action scenes I gotta admit were really cool and is one of the only reasons this movie's a 1/10 rather than a 0/10. And the songs... Look, they were all decent at best and I gotta admit they were all catchy and I can definitely see the appeal... If you're into K-pop... But I'm not, so.... yeah.
I can kInDa see sOmE of the appeal, but I don't like it.
