Actually the USA is the USA in name only. That in that it has been changed from a federation of 50 nations to one, starting with Lincoln himself who was the first to refer to the USA as a nation. That's when we we started calling ourselves Americans. Before that we were in New Yorkers, Virginians, Kentuckians... This was but one step in asserting total federal control at the expense of more local authority within the individual states.
