Back in 1954, the Comics Code Authority was created in response to a moral panic about comic books with gruesome imagery. One of tis rules stipulated that:

"Although slang and colloquialisms are acceptable, excessive use should be discouraged and, wherever possible, good grammar shall be employed."

That means you wouldn't be able to make a comic book summarizing the story of "My Fair Lady" (1964) and get a Comics Code Authority seal of approval.

The old classic EC horror comics were a big reason why the CCA was originally instituted. They were pretty explicit for the time. Especially the front covers. Some of the greatest artwork ever, too.
