Efraín Antonio Campo Flores and Franqui Francisco Flores de Freitas, nephews of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, were arrested on November 10, 2015. They were apprehended by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, while attempting to transport 800 kilograms of cocaine to the United States.
The nephews were charged with conspiring to import cocaine into the U.S. They were convicted in 2016 and each sentenced to 18 years in prison. Evidence indicated that they collaborated with members of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) to facilitate drug trafficking operations.
