The 1st Crusade was called for by the Emperor of Christian Byzantine/Eastern Rome, for help to stop the invading muslims... who had by then conquered Persia, Jerusalem, Christian Syria, a largely Christian Egypt, and North Africa which had enormous Christian populations.
