My career is spamming copy/pasting ball joints because even though I know how to make a working peg joint it is **not** fun to do

Hey want to join in a mech fighting story with a fight to the death?

Eh not really

This is part of a separate thing from bossfights

Well I'm glad you like what I make, even if I don't post on imgflip as often as I probably should

I'm pretty much done modeling for tonight but the current struggle is the hip armor because I'm not sure how I want it to move to give the legs more room to articulate
0 ups, 1d,

I prob don't have any right to suggest this but try looking at real armour as refrence to develop your ideas

Ehh I usually take more inspiration from Gundam and other mech related stuff

Though my style of mechs is pretty simplified compared to that. At least it kinda fits thematically, although there is a lore reason for bright colors I don't go out of my way to make the designs especially flashy unless it's part of their function

ah I see, I wish ya luck and sometimes a break is great for getting the ideas to flow

Other than getting stuck on the hip armor before I needed to go to bed this was actually going pretty quick so I think when I come back to it tomorrow I'll be able to figure it out

I'm already thinking I'll just make it all one piece that can wobble a bit (idk how else to describe the movement) since it'll be a leas complex mechanism to print

so the hip and legg is one piece that moves for poseability?
everything I know of gundam if from you.
0 ups, 1d,
1 reply
Ok

So the hip joints are separate from the hip armor

When I say I wanna make the hip armor all one piece I mean that it'll effectively be a ring that can tilt left or right to give either leg more room to move
0 ups, 1d
oooooooh, that makes more sense, thank you.
sounds awesome tho

Also here's another joke I dod with the names

Aurora doesn't know her real name. The name Aurora comes from her corporation serial number, A-R04. If you squint you can see a few letters of Aurora.

Now here's the funny part. She made her last name Borealis

I wish I could but even when (if) it actually becomes a show it's gonna be a pretty slow burn thing because quality over quantity

As in like, monthly episode releases rather than weekly

I'm pretty much using Glitch's logic here

Though I think part of the reason they're slow with their releases is since they're a relatively small studio

Even if I get a big studio and big budget I'm going for monthly releases

I use discord too so my brain kinda translated it lol

the way my brain works is whenever there is some big organisation I emmediatly think of those on the lower rungs and what their life is like. so yeah the main character is is an awesome mech piolt BUT PLEASE TELL ME MORE ABOUT THE ONE OF CHARACTER WORKER#12, they have 1 voiceline and I'm hooked
0 ups, 1d,
1 reply
Lmao

I forget how much I've said about the mech series but the first main arc is primarily about corporate greed, and it's pretty direct since the entire plot revolves around an evil corporation taking over an alien planet for resources and to develop weapons

The good guys are the Rebellion, people who escaped the corporation (who would have been experimented on) and are doing their best to fight back and help the natives reclaim the planet
0 ups, 1d,
1 reply
that explains that lil alien guy
but with the size of the corp one can assume there is atleast 1 dude working his 9-5 helping the rebellion by emailing photos of documents on his bosses desk
0 ups, 1d,
1 reply
Yeah they've got spies in there

Though there are more dangerous positions to be a spy in than others

Heck, there are even worse positions in general than being a spy. Being a rebellion mech pilot in any of the walled cities is a NIGHTMARE.

(Walled cities are the largest corporation bases, which house the human civilian population of Onyra. Being a mech pilot there is hard because not only are you surrounded by corporate eyes at all times, but you also have to avoid hurting civilians of you end up in combat)

0 ups, 1d

Underground tunnels

Construction sites

Stuff like that

Part of what the rebellion is doing outside of the cities is actually to distract the corporation from what's happening inside them, and something tells me they're gonna be more interested in finding out why warships are falling out of the sky than why somebody's grandma saw a mech hiding in an alley at 3am
0 ups, 1d
interesting
0 ups, 1d
Plus they use mechs the corporation usually uses so they have a bit of a disguise

Because why not here's everything I've modeled before I go to sleep. The thing on the right is mainly to keep the proportions correct and to mark my progress. All the little icons are notes for stuff I'll do later

Color meanings

Red: haven't modeled yet. Exclusively used on proportion model

Green: modeled and finished

Orange: modeled, but may need more work to be compatible with future parts (or used to mark spare parts)

Yellow: current focus/unfinished part

Grey: ignore this

In my case my knowledge is more for figure design than anything else

It does effect aesthetic design to a degree though since I'll look at what I'm drawing and think "ok... is this physically possible or am I being an idiot"
0 ups, 1d,
1 reply
the ancient texts decribe "the rule of cool" in fiction it doesn't have to make 100% sense or work logically if its "cool". an example I think you might know is weponry, idk gundam weaponry but every scifi has their spin on lasers, some might be possible but most are only present cause it looks cool.

what I am trying to say is don't beat yourself up over something not being strictly possible.
0 ups, 1d,
2 replies
Fair but when I say physically I mean wether it can work on a figure or not

For example literally anything with floating parts is a bit difficult with a figure since you'll need transparent stands to hold the parts up
0 ups, 1d,
2 replies
I see my error, would certain asetetic choices really have that much affect on structural integrity? correct me if I'm wrong please
0 ups, 1d,
2 replies
Oh also especially thin or thick limbs can be a problem, not just floating parts because you either can't fit very good joints in or none of your joints are good enough to hold up the weight
0 ups, 1d
Same with weapons

Big weapon = big weight = big problem
0 ups, 1d,
1 reply
idk bout gundam plastic but if your 3d printing the pieces, there are certain plastic you can use with a rage of properties that can fix the thin/thick limb problem. everything else is above my engineering quilification
0 ups, 1d,
1 reply
Fair but you get my point

It's good to balance aesthetics with functionality. In my case I'm doing it both so I can turn the designs into figures and because it's part of the theme of the designs in my series, they're based on Gundam but the flashiness is really toned down because nobody wants to have to weld V fins and shoulder spikes back on every time the Gundam comes back from a battle

"sir we have a probleem"

Even just the ear segments Dashing Lance has are a bit of a risky move, but it's how the corporation identifies their mechs

Though it later becomes a symbol of those freed from the corporation
0 ups, 1d
but what kinda paint do they even use for it to survive those clashes cause I doubt even a mega corp can afford a paint budget like that

Exactly.

It depends on how absurd you wanna go with aesthetics

If you wanna go with a basic mech that has a jetpack and a gun, that's easy. But if you wanna make a mech with floating wings and rings surrounding it... have fun making the stands subtle.

It's not that it's impossible, you just have to balance aesthetics with functionality if you plan on bringing anything into the real world like I do.

A lot of these mechanisms I'm gonna have to make for this are easier to demonstrate than describe

Like when I say double jointed knees if you're a gunpla addict you'll instantly know what I mean, but if you haven't there's a chance you think of something like this
0 ups, 1d,

ty for the diagram very helpful visuliser, sorry about my ignorace in this. But I love listening to friends talk about their passions so I hope its okay.
prob the wrong termenology but is that an "endoskeleton" for one of the mechs or something else.
0 ups, 1d,
1 reply
Nope. This isn't even a mech, it's an Onyrite. The Onyrites are the aliens in my mech series, they help the good guys

Also what I actually mean when I say double jointed knees is two joints that move in the same direction so the leg can bend as much as a human leg
0 ups, 1d,
2 replies
LOREEEE

from a technical standpoint, wouldn't a normal mechanical joint bend a similar amount to a human leg if thats the joint its replicating? or is there a trade of for that mobility in a single joint I am unaware of?
0 ups, 1d,
1 reply
Depends on how the joint is set up

I've built kits that use a single joint in the knee and they usually don't go all the way parallel with the upper part of the leg when fully bent

Basically, single joint works better on squishy humans than tiny hard plastic figure
0 ups, 1d,
1 reply
now you mention it that does make sense as material that would block the bend on a mech is squished asside on a person, the knee is around the midpoint of the leg on a single joint. For a double joint whats the position might be?
0 ups, 1d,
1 reply
Basically
It's like this

There's the thigh, then a joint, then a short length of material, then the second joint and the rest of the leg

Usually it's covered up by armor so you can't really tell from most angles but if you look at the back of a gundam's leg it's pretty easy to see since they have to have a gap there

Perks of being a gunpla addict

When you design your own you know plenty of joint types to use
0 ups, 1d
hey, random knowledge is ALWAYS bound to be useful. If not, your bound to make it useful, knowing alot about an era of history isn't that useful, but it is for writtng a book in that setting >=3
0 ups, 1d,
1 reply
There are ways to set up a single joint to give it the full range of motion though, like shifting it off center

The trade off there though is aesthetics because depending on how your design is set up it might not look the best

In fact, double jointed knees are effectively just a version of that offset you can turn on and off
0 ups, 1d,
2 replies
aesthetics, so thats how you spell it

what I meant srry was would it be a weaker conection, or features that might be bad in a fight, for the fight bots (srry)
0 ups, 1d,
1 reply
Now that I think of it the only recent design I can think of that doesn't use it is Gundam GQuuuuuuX, but there's lots of other weird stuff in that anime anyway

The way they worked around the single joint problem wasn't an offset, but instead just strategically placed gaps
0 ups, 1d,
1 reply
Well there's also the grassley mobile suits in witch from Mercury but that show's a few years old now
0 ups, 1d,
1 reply
0 ups, 1d
Sometimes I'm not sure I understand them either

GQuuuuuuX is by far the weirdest Gundam name I've ever heard, and if they manage to come up with something weirder I'd genuinely be impressed
0 ups, 1d
It just gives a higher degree of movement

This style of knee joint even shows up in the Gundam anime so I doubt it negatively effects combat if practically everything uses it

In my series it also won't, it'll just be a common feature of mech design that doesn't directly effect anything
